Keep your habesha kemis looking its best with gentle, garment-specific care. Fabric, dyes, embroidery and decorative trims vary, so always follow the care label or the maker’s instructions first. If the label is missing or the dress has delicate, metallic or beaded details, ask a professional cleaner experienced with embellished garments before washing.
Hand wash only when the care instructions allow it. Test a hidden area for colour transfer with a damp white cloth before wetting the whole dress; stop if colour transfers. Wash separately in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent suitable for the fabric. Gently move the dress through the water without scrubbing, twisting or prolonged soaking. Rinse gently in cool water. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning mixtures unless the label specifically permits them.
Support the wet dress rather than lifting it by the shoulders. Gently press out water without wringing, then roll it in a clean white towel to absorb moisture. Reshape and dry flat on a clean towel or drying rack in an airy, shaded place. Avoid tumble drying, radiators and strong direct sunlight unless the care label says otherwise.
Act promptly: lift away solids gently and blot liquid with a clean white cloth. Do not rub. For washable fabric, test any fabric-appropriate cleaner on a hidden area first, and keep treatment away from delicate trim. Avoid hot water on an unidentified stain and do not iron or apply heat until it is gone. Take oily, stubborn or unknown stains, and stains on dry-clean-only garments, to a professional cleaner. Tell them what caused the stain and what you have already tried.
Store the dress clean and completely dry in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Fold heavy or delicate dresses with acid-free tissue between folds to reduce strain on the fabric and decoration. Use a padded hanger only if the garment can support its own weight. Check stored garments periodically for dampness or pests.
Use a clean, breathable garment bag for storage and travel to help protect against dust and snagging. Avoid long-term storage in sealed plastic, and never pack a damp dress. A mesh laundry bag is not permission to machine wash: use one only if the care label allows machine washing, with the stated cycle and temperature.
